Fukushima 10 years on: Japan remembers the tsunami that killed 20,000 people

It’s exactly a decade today since a devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck north east Japan, leading to a nuclear disaster at Fukushima. Over 20,000 people were left dead or missing.

The Emperor of Japan said his “heart aches” for the survivors still struggling to rebuild their communities. Over the last 10 years billions of pounds have been spent rebuilding towns and villages, but some areas are still very damaged and remain no-go zones.
