Furlough scheme ends after 18 months

At one point, it covered the wages of nearly a third of the country’s workforce. But today furlough comes to an end.

Most economists believe that the multi-billion pound scheme saved Britain from mass unemployment during the Covid lockdown.

Now it is disappearing just as the economy faces a new shock – with gas, petrol and food prices shooting up, threatening a cost of living crisis.
