A former Premier League footballer has been chosen as the new President of Georgia – though not by its people.
The election of hardliner Mikheil Kavelashvili means the ruling Georgian Dream party has tightened its grip on power.
It’s accused of rigging parliamentary elections in October with the help of its allies in Moscow.
In response, Georgia’s current pro-Western president vowed to stay on beyond the end of her term on Monday. Meanwhile, in the capital Tbilisi, protestors have taken to the streets round the Parliament.
