Girls banned from Afghan schools despite Taliban assurances

After being barred from getting an education since the Taliban took over last August, girls in Afghanistan were looking forward to returning to their classrooms today.

But on the eve of the new school year the Taliban decreed that secondary schools for girls would stay closed.

The surprise decision seems to reflect a power-struggle in the leadership, as it comes just days after all students were told to return.
