Government activates emergency measures to tackle prison overcrowding

The government has activated emergency measures across parts of northern England and the Midlands designed to tackle prison overcrowding.

Under Operation Early Dawn, defendants who are waiting to appear in court will be held in police cells until space in prisons becomes available.

It comes as more people charged over the recent riots were sentenced.
