Government given ultimatum on housing of people with learning disabilities and autism

“Hospitals are not homes and people should not live in them.”

That was the conclusion of a report published by the Department of Health in 2012.

It promised that people with learning disabilities and autism would get personalised care and support in suitable accommodation, but deadline after deadline has been missed and over 2,000 people are still detained in secure facilities.

Now the government has been given 14 days to improve the situation, or face legal action.
