Holocaust survivor says we should be ‘kinder to refugees’

Now survivors of the Nazi death camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau have gathered to commemorate the 78th anniversary of its liberation – as events were held around the world to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Prayers were recited for the six million Jews and others who were murdered by the Nazi regime – while leaders of the Auschwitz museum compared the horrors of that time to the atrocities being committed right now by Russia in Ukraine – declaring that the world must not be indifferent to crimes like the massacres in Bucha and Mariupol.

We spoke to Holocaust survivor Janine Webber – who is 90 years old, and began by asking her to tell us more about the town she was born in, which we now know as Lviv in Ukraine – although it was part of Poland then
