It is the first time in nearly four months of demonstrations in Hong Kong that police have hit a protester with live rounds. They also cancelled the usual fireworks display in the harbour.

The contrast could not have been greater with the Chinese capital Beijing, where the birthday party turned into a lavish display of pomp, circumstance and power.
