Hope lies with rowers to end GB’s gold drought

Team GB is hoping to break its gold medal duck later today as Heather Stanning and Helen Glover compete together in the women’s rowing pairs.

There will be three rowing finals taking place from 10.10am, the women’s pair, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eights.

Team GB’s Heather Stanning and Helen Glover will be hoping to achieve glory after breaking the Olympic record in their women’s pairs heat. The duo competes in the final at 10.10am.

At 10.20am Melanie Wilson, Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton and Beth Rodford will fight for a medal in the women’s quadruple sculls.

Britain’s eights team of Richard Egington, James Foad, Matthew Langridge, Constantine Louloudis, Alex Partridge, Tom Ransley, Mohamed Sbihi and Greg Searle, with cox Phelan Hill, will compete at 10.30pm at Eton’s Dorney Lake.

Elsewhere in Team GB

Team GB’s male gymnasts will hope to add to the bronze success earlier in the week in the artistic gymnastics individual all-round event. Daniel Purvis (pictured right) and Kristian Thomas will be competing.

Chris Mears and Nick Robinson-Baker will compete in the three-metre synchronised diving.

In the kayaking Richard Hounslow will hope to progress to the finals, held 3.15pm, following the 1.30pm semi-finals. His canoe doubles partner David Florence failed with this task in the individual canoe slalom event yesterday.

Fencers Sophie Williams and Louis Bond-Williams will hope to progress in the women’s individual sabre. Qualification begins at 9am and the final is at 8.30pm.

Georgina Geikie will compete in the 25m pistol event, with qualification starting at 9am. Sally Conway is in the less than 70kg category in the judo, whilst Winston Gordon represents Team GB in the less than 90kg category.

The battle between top US swimmer Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will continue as they meet in the 100m men’s freestyle final.
