Houthi rebels: who are they and what do they want to achieve?

Amid increasing attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, tonight the rebel group claimed they struck a British oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis control a swathe of territory in Yemen’s north and west – including the capital Sanaa and crucially, a long stretch of Red Sea coast.

The US government says it will designate the Houthis as a terrorist organisation.
