The hospital corridors crowded with dying patients, the doctors and nurses whose masked faces were etched with despair.

The Italian town of Bergamo was at the epicentre of Europe’s first wave of the pandemic.

Now, 12 months on, it is back in lockdown crisis yet again, as Italy struggles with a third wave of Covid infections.

Hospital ICU wards are filling up again and staff, still exhausted after a year of trauma, want to know why key lessons still have not been learned.
