Iran today is a battle of numbers and slogans

As Iran celebrates the 31st anniversary of the revolution, a slogan war is emerging on the streets between competing factions, blogs Lindsey Hilsum.

The thousands of Iranian government supporters in Azadi Square are shouting “Death to America!” and other well-worn slogans of the Islamic revolution.

The green protesters, running along the side streets and trying to escape the Basij militia, are trying to subvert to old aphorisms of the establishment.

Here are some of the slogans they’re shouting (most of which rhyme in Persian, I’m told)

– One country, one government – with the people’s vote!

– May the people’s dark night become day. The green movement will be victorious!

– The blood in our veins is a gift to our people!

– The path of Montazeri shall continue!

– Montazeri, where are you? Moussavi is alone now!

– All together, all green!

– The green movement deserves freedom!

– Neither Gaza nor Lebanon – my life for Iran!

– Political prisoners must be freed!

– The Islamic republic must hold true!

– The blood of our martyrs is the promise of freedom; the people want citizen’s rights!

– University, university – bastion of liberty! Students, students – emblemsof awareness!
