Israel is no stranger to crises on its streets. Apart from the wars of 1967 and 1973 there were the bus bombs during the second intifada, and what seemed like the constant spectre of terror.

But for almost two decades, Israel has largely managed to contain any potential threat from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with high walls, acres of barbed wire and swarms of surveillance drones.

But none of that protected it on Saturday morning.
