It’s the holy month of Ramadan in contested East Jerusalem, but it’s been anything but peaceful. Every night has seen new acts of violence. Last night saw hours of running battles between police, ultra-nationalist Jewish activists and Palestinian youths throwing stones and firecrackers.

Long a flashpoint, tensions in East Jerusalem have been inflamed in recent weeks by old hatreds and modern social media, including videos of assaults posted on TikTok.
