Israeli tank shells kill at least two Palestinians and wound 20 in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian medics and local eyewitnesses said.

The attack is believed to be in response to a previous reported attack on an Israeli army patrol on the Israeli-Gaza border.

Ambulances and private vehicles rushed the wounded, some of them in a critical condition, to hospital, witnesses said. The identity of the wounded is not currently known, and the Israeli military has declined any immediate comment on the incident.

The attack took place during a period of increased tension on the Israeli-Gaza border, with Palestinians militants firing rockets into Israel, and Israel in turn launching aerial raids on Palestinians.

On Thursday a 12-year-old boy was killed by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip during clashes with a militant group.
