Police release names of Jim Clark rally fatalities

Three people are dead and six injured after crashes at the Jim Clark car rally in Scotland.

Three people were killed and six injured in separate crashes at a car rally held in the Scottish Borders.

Police said the most serious crash happened at 4pm yesterday, when a car hit and killed three people.

The three people killed have been named by Police Scotland as John Provan, 64, Elizabeth Allan, 63, and John Leonard Stern, 71.

A fourth person was left in a critical condition and was taken to an Edinburgh hospital after the crash.

Two hours earlier, another rally car came off the road injured five people, one of whom was in a serious condition, said police.

The rally was stopped immediately after the second incident and the event has now been cancelled.

Police Scotland said work was underway to remove the bodies of the three people killed near Coldstream.

Superintendent Phil O’Kane of Police Scotland said officers were working to “forensically and sympathetically remove the deceased” from the scene, and were working to contact the next of kin.

About 250 competitors had been taking part in the event, which attracted thousands of spectators. The event has been running for 44 years.

In a statement yesterday the organisers of the Jim Clark Rally offered their “heartfelt condolences and sympathy” to all those affected by the “tragic events”.

A rally car could still be seen at the scene of the accident near two white tents erected on the road.

A police cordon was in place at the entry to the road where the fatal accident occurred, and a bunch of flowers has been left beside a tree in tribute to those who died.
