It faces a real challenge in the Stoke Central by-election in a few weeks’ time. Maybe today’s announcement by the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell of more money for the north and a fairer share of funding between London and the North is a mere coincidence. He tells me his announcement is nothing to do with electoral politics.
