Kenya protests: at least five killed as parliament burns

At least five people have reportedly been shot dead in the Kenyan capital Nairobi after police opened fire on protesters outside the country’s parliament.

Crowds stormed the building as MPs were voting on a law to raise taxes. Part of the complex was set on fire, while there were running battles between police and protesters outside.

Kenyan president William Ruto said there would be a “full and effective response” to what he called “treasonous events”.
