Life under Assad in ‘the capital of Syria’s revolution’

International Editor

Syria’s third city, Homs, was called ‘the capital of the revolution’ against the regime of Bashar al Assad.

Its people paid a high price for rebelling against the dictatorship. One diplomat said what happened there “broke the limits of barbarity”.

Homs lies north of Damascus. In February 2012, the Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin was killed by the Assad regime in the neighbourhood of Baba Amr – which was under siege.
