David Cameron’s chief of communications Andy Coulson resigned over pressure from the “continued coverage” of the phone hacking allegations focused around the News of the World when he was editor.
Mr Coulson issued a statement today confirming his resignation in which he reiterated his innocence at the allegations made against him.
“Unfortunately, continued coverage of events connected to my old job at the News of the World has made it difficult for me to give the 110 per cent needed in this role,” he said.
“I stand by what I’ve said about those events but when the spokesman needs a spokesman, it’s time to move on.”
