FIRST GOLD FOR TEAM GB

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover dominated the women’s rowing pairs final from the start and never looked under threat.

Germany took the early lead in the race, with Great Britain in second, though the British then quickly took the lead. After the first quarter they were 2.8 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

Halfway through, the pair were three and a half seconds ahead of the rest of the field, with New Zealand in pursuit. The pair then pushed harder, expanding their lead over the field.

BADMINTON DISCIPLINARY HEARING

Disciplinary proceedings are launched after eight badminton players, including two world champions, are accused of deliberately missing shots to secure a better draw later in the tournament.

London 2012 Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe called the apparent attempt to throw the matches “depressing” and “unacceptable”.

But Games organisers Locog will not be offering refund tickets for the matches.

The World Badminton Federation charged the women with “not using one’s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport” after four women’s doubles pairs appeared to be throwing their games.
