Detectives from the Specialist Crime Directorate believe that organised groups behind the disorder covered their faces and dressed all in black in order to avoid being identified.

There were 201 arrests during the disturbances, which centred on the Fortnum and Mason store in Piccadilly. 56 police officers were injured.

Officers working for Operation Brontide have collated hours of CCTV and police footage. The video they’ve released is from the Oxford Circus area and shows one group changing out of dark hoodies, face coverings and putting on brighter T shirts before disappearing into the crowds.

Detective Chief Superintendent Matthew Horne, who is leading the investigation, said the images “clearly show the lengths that individuals will go to in order to hide their identities; they are sought in connection with conspiring with others to cause criminal damage.”
