They were the longest climate talks on record – but the UN’s marathon negotiations in Madrid ended this morning without a deal on the key issue of carbon markets – with delegates opting to leave it until their Glasgow summit next year.

Environmental activists claimed richer nations had failed to show enough commitment to tackling climate change.
