A man with a knife is arrested on suspicion of trespassing at the gates of Buckingham Palace, police confirm.
The 44-year-old man remains in custody at a London police station.
Scotland Yard said the man attempted to gain access to the palace on Monday morning via the north gate.
He was immediately apprehended by police and searched. Police seized a knife in his possession.
The man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the Queen was not in the building when the man tried to break in.
It is understood that no one was hurt in the incident.
Last month a man was arrested after scaling a 12 foot fence and breaking into the palace, in one of the most serious security breaches in more than 30 years.
The break-in prompted a police review of security at the palace.
