Masked men attack pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong

Police in Hong Kong have been accused of standing by while a gang of masked attackers stormed a metro station, attacking dozens of people. But Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam was quicker to condemn protesters, some of whom had earlier defaced China’s national emblem. Beijing said the behaviour of some demonstrators “must not be tolerated”.
