Firing tear gas and closing the border: that’s how the US responded to hundreds of Central American migrants who tried to run from Mexican police and cross the US border overnight. They say they’re families fleeing poverty and violence. President Trump claimed many were what he called “stone cold criminals”, seizing on the chaotic stand-off to underline his anti-immigration stance. And he demanded Mexico move them back to their home countries.
