Naomi Osaka: are media damaging sportspeople’s mental health

What was supposed to be a break between matches in the French Open has turned into a break from professional tennis for the four time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka.

She has pulled out of the tournament for mental health reasons, after being penalised by organisers for refusing to take part in post-match press conferences.

Tournament officials say she’s breaching her contract. She says more needs to be done to take care of players.

In a statement the organisers of all the four grand slam tournaments commended Naomi Osaka for sharing how she feels about her own mental health, adding they will work with all the game’s stakeholders to improve the players’ experience at tournaments.

We spoke to former tennis players Annabel Croft and Jo Durie about the decision.
