NATO criticises Trump for comments that ‘put American and European soldiers’ at risk

There has been alarm and condemnation from America’s allies after former President Donald Trump suggested the US might leave NATO members undefended against a Russian invasion.

Mr Trump proposed he would not protect nations which fail to pay enough towards the alliance’s budget. But with many NATO powers not hitting the target of spending two percent of GDP on defence, could his remarks persuade some of them to cough up more money?
