Nepal earthquake: climber captures Mount Everest avalanche

Watch the terrifying moment a climber on Mount Everest filmed a huge wall of snow hitting the mountain’s base camp – and see aerial footage of the devastation wreaked on Nepal.

Mountaineer Jost Kobusch, who survived the impact, shot this video as an avalanche triggered by the Nepal earthquake struck.

Just as the avalanche hit, Mr Kobusch managed to take cover with a friend and can later be heard breathing heavily as he realises the full extent of what has just happened.

Nepal’s Tourism Ministry said at least 1,000 climbers, including about 400 foreigners, were camping at the base of Mount Everest at the time of the quake.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association said at least 17 bodies have been recovered.

Nearly 3,800 people have been killed in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal and neighboring countries on Saturday. Over 100,000 have been left homeless.

Kathmandu

Video footage taken from a drone above the capital Kathmandu on Monday revealed the extent of the damage caused by the quake. The images show toppled monuments, cracks across major roads and widespread damage.

Famous landmarks, including the Dharahara tower, were also destroyed.

Roads leading out of Kathmandu were also jammed with people trying to climb onto buses or hitch a ride aboard cars and trucks to the plains. Many residents have slept out in the open.

Overwhelmed authorities were also trying to cope with a shortage of drinking water, food and electricity, as well as the threat of disease.

Nepal’s ancient city of Bhaktapur, around eight miles east of Kathmandu, also suffered because of the quake.

Several Hindu temples and palaces were destroyed in the city centre. The city’s Durbar Square, a popular tourist site, was also reduced to rubble.
