Northern leaders call for ‘levelling up’ to be enshrined in law

Remember the Government’s levelling up agenda? One of Boris Johnson’s flagship policies which is now in peril – with many of its major projects over time and under-resourced.

Northern mayors have been trying to reboot the whole agenda – and were hoping to press that point home to Levelling up secretary Michael Gove at today’s special convention in Manchester. Mr Gove hailed the “spirit of Thatcherism” to help boost Northern development – but rushed away minutes after his speech.
