Number of students passing GCSEs edges up

The number of students passing their GCSEs or scoring top grades has edged up for the second year running – despite claims that the exams have got harder.

With more than 700,000 students getting their results today across England, Wales and Northern Ireland – the percentage of top grades was also a fraction higher than last year – leading to some relieved scenes as students opened their results.
