Paralympics: backstroke glory for Frederiksen

ParalympicsGB swimmer Heather Frederiksen takes gold in the 100m backstroke – beating her main rival, the USA’s Jessica Long.

Going into the race Frederiksen already had one silver medal to her name from the women’s 400m freestyle in the S8 classification. She had qualified for the final of this race in the fastest time.

Her main rival was the USA’s Jessica Long, who has won three golds and two silver so far at London 2012. She had beaten Frederiksen to gold in the 400m freestyle.

Stephanie Millward from ParalympicsGB won silver in the 400m freestyle under the S9 classification. South Africa’s Natalie du Toit won the gold.

In the first swimming final of the evening Oliver Hynd won a bronze medal in the men’s 100m backstroke in the S8 classification. Russia’s Konstantin Lisenkov wons the gold with a new Paralympic record.

Ellie Simmonds then won bronze in the 50m freestyle (S6), her weakest race.

In the men’s 400m freestyle in the S9 classification, Australia’s Brendan Hall broke the world record by four seconds. ParalympicsGB’s James Crisp finished the final in last place.

ParalympicsGB’s last medal of the night came from Matthew Walker, who won bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle in the S7 classification. The USA’s Lantz Lamback won gold.
