Three people were also injured in the shooting, which took place in a classroom at Oikos University in Oakland, California.

Police surrounded the university, based in a large industrial park, and then followed Goh in an intense manhunt that ended with his capture at a nearby shopping centre, police authorities said.

The dean of Oikos University said the gunman, a Korean national, was a former nursing student. It is not immediately clear if he dropped out, or was expelled.

Five of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two more died at area hospitals. The three additional victims are recovering from non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Howard Jordand, chief of police said: “Within an hour and a half, investigators were in possession of the suspect’s photo, and were en route to his home, as well as a separate residence of a relative.”

Around 35 people are believed to have been in the building at the time of the shooting, said Mr Jordand, adding: “The suspect, who is believed to be an Oakland resident, surrendered to officers of the Alameda Police Department in their city. He was arrested, and is currently in the custody of the Oakland Police Department.”

The police chief said that he will “take a few days to put the pieces together” because of the chaos that took place at the time.

“It’s the kind of pain and situation that we won’t understand totally, immediately, but that will leave the community asking questions for a long time,” said Jean Quan, mayor of Oakland.

Oikos University offers courses in religious studies, music, and vocational nursing. According to its website, the university offers students “the opportunity to obtain a Christian education that is based on solid Christian doctrine and ideology”.
