The government has been criticised for failing to deport hundreds of foreign criminals, many of whom have now disappeared.
Almost £1 billion of tax-payers money was spent last year managing 12,250 foreign offenders currently in the UK.
But one in six (760 of 4,200) foreign national offenders have simply disappeared, reports the Times.
And among these 58 of the missing criminals are considered “high harm”, all of whom have absconded while awaiting deportation in the last four years.
The National Audit Office said that despite the police now having ten times the number of officials working on the foreign prisoners, their numbers have gone up.
Margaret Hodge, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee said: “It beggars belief that the Home Office and Ministry of Justice are managing the removal of foreign national offenders without knowing basic costs and how best to target their resources.”
But the Home Office said it was becoming easier to remove foreign offenders from the UK due to newly enacted powers.
Conservative MP Philip Hollobone, told the Times: “Most people will be staggered that despite increasing its staffing for deportations from 100 to 900, the Home Office is not deporting any more [foreign offenders] than it was before.”
Charles Clark lost his job as home secretary over the number of foreign criminals.
