Police hunt driver after fatal incident kills girl

Police are hunting for the driver of a car who failed to stop at the scene of a incident on Friday night in Sheffield that left one young girl dead and another seriously injured.

Jasmyn Chan, 14, described as “an active, friendly girl who was very giving”, died and a 12-year-old girl was left with serious injuries after a collision with a car in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police launched an urgent appeal to trace the driver of a car that failed to stop at the scene of the incident. Senior officers have asked the motorist to consider Jasmyn’s family as they issued a direct appeal for him or her to come forward.

Officers described the car as small and dark in colour, possibly green and perhaps a Volkswagen or a Honda.

A police spokesman said the girls were crossing Normanton Hill close to the junction with Richmond Hill Road near Richmond Park, when they were involved in the collision at 9.20pm.

The car was travelling downhill towards the A57 Mosborough Parkway.

Chief Inspector Stuart Walne said: “We urgently need to find the driver of this car. This is a tragic situation that has taken a young life and seriously affected another.

“If you were the driver of this car please contact police immediately. There may have been reasons that you didn’t stop last night, but now a girl has died and we need to speak to you.

“The car is likely to be damaged from the collision. Have you noticed a small dark car that is damaged on your street this morning? Are your friends and family acting out of character today? Were they out in their car last night?”

He added: “This situation is even more upsetting as the driver didn’t stop at the scene.

“The driver may not have intended to cause this collision nor are they likely to have been aware of the extent of the injuries they caused last night.

“However, I would urge them to think about the impact on Jasmyn’s family, friends and community and please come forward. Investigating officers are working on a number of leads and people have been giving us information.”
