‘Political opponents are slowly dying in prison’, says Belarusian activist after Navalny’s death

For Belarusian opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was particularly shocking. Her own husband has been in prison since declaring his intention to run against President Alexander Lukashenko in 2020.

She took his place and is widely considered to have won the election. She’s warning that if there are no consequences, Navalny’s murder could give authoritarian regimes a green light to kill other political prisoners. We spoke earlier and began by asking for her thoughts on the recent Parliamentary and local elections in Belarus.
