While being interviewed this morning, the Chancellor declined to express confidence in the Post Office Chief Executive Nick Read.
He was asked if Mr Read’s position was tenable, after The Sunday Times reported that he was fixated on his pay when he should have been trying to help postmasters who were wrongly convicted.
It said he demanded a pay package of more than a million pounds and threatened to resign.
Last week, the sacked Post Office chairman Henry Staunton told a select committee Mr Read had repeatedly said he would quit over his pay – something he categorically denied to MPs.
We were joined by the select committee chair Liam Byrne.
