Preparing for night of the living dead

No one expects a zombie apocalypse. But that is exactly why you need to be prepared. And the University of Florida is making sure they are ready, just in case the Living Dead attack.

On the university website they posted an emergency plan for dealing with hurricanes and pandemics. And Zombies. The document lays out how university officials would respond to attacks by “flesh-eating, apparently life impaired individuals”. It notes that a zombie outbreak might include “documentation of lots of strange moaning”.

In the school’s “Disaster Preparedness” manual, zombie attack is simulation exercise number five.
It tells students how to identify a possible zombie outbreak and includes a handy “infected co-worker dispatch” form.

“It is clear that international media have begun paying increasing attention to the possibility of an outbreak of zombie behaviour spectrum disorder. Likewise, major metropolitan police agencies are starting to pay attention to the possibility of zombie attacks and are addressing citizen notification concerns,” reads part of the six-page instructions.

The manual also includes tips on proper weaponry against the undead. Garlic is not mentioned but long range rifles, handguns, chainsaws and baseball bats are recommended.

It also includes a sample administrative form for staff to fill in after they have killed a zombie-infected colleague, giving details of the incident and explaining why they had no choice but to destroy them.

A University of Florida spokesman says the exercise was written by an employee at the school’s academic technology office to ‘add a little bit of levity’ to disaster preparation discussions.

The document has now been removed from the site, abut a version of it saved by Google can still be seen here.
