Priti Patel says new asylum rules will ‘deter illegal entry’ and crack down on traffickers

The home secretary has set out plans to change the asylum system so refugees are assessed on how they arrive in the UK.

Priti Patel said she wants to crack down on criminal trafficking gangs and ensure that people who arrive through official channels are given priority.

But human rights lawyers have warned that the changes could breach international law and lead to further legal challenges and delays.
