Another public appearance today from President Putin – but it couldn’t have been further from the long, long conference tables of the past.

Russia’s famously germophobic president has been filmed out and about, mingling with real people, shaking hands and blowing kisses.

So what could have prompted this sudden desire to get down with the proletariat?
