Queen Elizabeth and her 15 prime ministers

This morning the King addressed MPs and Lords from the same spot in Westminster Hall where his ancestor Charles I was tried for his life.

That sharp lesson in what happens to monarchs who challenge parliament, led to today’s constitutional monarchy.  The new King promised “faithfully to follow” the example of his mother”, turning his back on what some see as a lifetime of passionately pursuing his favourite causes.
