Record low turnout in Iran elections amid widespread discontent

There are no official figures out yet, but Iran’s state media says turnout in Friday’s election was a record low of 41 percent.

The vote was seen as a test of the regime’s legitimacy following the 2022 protests, triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Initial results show hardliners keeping their grip on parliament. But with all candidates heavily vetted and reformists banned from running, there was little choice for those who did turn out.
