Rising Covid cases and deaths hit Portugal as hospitals run out of beds

Last year Portugal was one of the countries praised for managing the coronavirus well.

But for much of the past fortnight, it’s been the worst in the world for new infections and deaths per capita.

The country is running out of ICU beds and some patients have been airlifted to the Portuguese Island of Madeira.

So desperate is the situation that doctors from Germany were flown in this week.
