It’s been a day of celebration across Syria. Setting aside their fears for the future, tens of thousands of people poured into squares after Friday prayers for mass ‘Victory Day’ rallies – invited there by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – the rebel group whose lightning offensive ousted the Assad regime. The rebels’ most potent enemy was not Assad’s forces, but Russian armour and airpower. Today, a huge Russian military column withdrew north from Damascus.
