Events in Syria are being watched very closely here, not least because this country has hosted more than a million Syrian refugees since 2015, more than any other European country.
But it’s also because like elsewhere in Europe the refugee question has once again been weaponised in Germany’s febrile politics.
Today the Bundestag passed a No Confidence vote in the hapless coalition government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The opposition CDU is likely to take over – egged on by the far right AFD who have used tough talk and policies on asylum seekers to get ahead in the polls.
