Schumacher crash ‘off piste’, helmet cam footage shows

French prosecutor Patrick Quincy says the team investigating Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident have more detail after studying helmet camera footage of the accident.

Michael Schumacher remains in a critical condition after his accident on the ski slopes of Meribel, in the French Alps, on 29 December.

The team looking into his accident are trying to work out what caused Schumacher, a good skier, to crash and suffer such serious head injuries.

French prosecutor Patrick Quincy told reporters that, at the time of the accident, the pistes were clearly marked out according to French law and confirmed that footage from Schumacher’s helmet camera showed he was several metres off a groomed trail when he lost his balance and crashed. The team have also visited the scene of the crash and spoken to witnesses and the medical team.

Mr Quincy said Schumacher was travelling at the speed of a “very good skier on fairly hard terrain” when he hit a rock and fell. He said the 45-year-old did not really reduce his speed when he went off piste between a red and blue piste.

Schumacher’s family asked the media to respect their privacy earlier this week as the Formula One champion continues to fight for his life in hospital.
