Senegal’s ‘constitutional coup’ – is one of west Africa’s most stable democracies collapsing?

It’s being called a “constitutional coup”. Fears are growing that Senegal – one of the most stable democracies in West Africa – is turning its back on free and fair elections.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall and his ruling coalition have voted to delay elections that were scheduled for this month – until the end of the year.

Security forces stormed parliament to forcibly remove opposition politicians who were trying to block the vote.

Two opposition leaders had already been disqualified from the ballot.
