Serbia celebrates Djokovic Wimbledon win

Thousands of people take to the streets of Serbia to welcome home Novak Djokovic, who won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday after overcoming Rafa Nadal in the final.

Novak Djokovic received a rapturous welcome in Serbia following his triumph at Wimbledon and on his first day as the world’s top-ranked tennis player.

Tens of thousands of fans chanted Djokovic’s nickname – “Nole” – as they gathered in front of the national assembly building in Belgrade at a boisterous welcoming ceremony.

Djokovic addressed the cheering crowds in an emotional speech.

“Tonight I owe you everything because you made this day the most beautiful day of my life. I will never forget this.

“This trophy I dedicate to you, this trophy I dedicate to Serbia,” Djokovic told the crowd, as he held a replica of the Wimbledon trophy that is given to the winner to keep.

Then, having showed the world his tennis moves over the weekend, the 24-year-old showed off his dance moves as he performed with a local band on stage.

Djokovic beat the former number world number one, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the Wimbledon final on Sunday.
