London Fire Brigade said there was no evidence of a fire in the 1,004ft Shard, near London Bridge, adding that the smoke was dissipating. Around 900 people left the building following the evacuation.
A fire brigade spokesman said: “Firefighters are investigating reports of smoke in the basement of the Shard. There is no suggestion at this stage that there is a fire. No injuries have been reported.”
He said the presence of seven fire engines and around 50 firefighters was usual for that type of building. Scotland Yard said no arrests had been made and inquiries on the cause of fire were ongoing.
Channel 4 News reporter Fatima Manji, on the scene, was told by police that the building was evacuated as a “precaution.”
