Police forces in England and Wales are failing to follow child safeguarding protocols and must do more to minimise harm whilst using their powers to stop and search, according to an investigation by the official inspectorate.
The investigation also found that forces were unable to explain why Black people are twelve times more likely to be targeted on suspicionless stops, also known as section 60.
It follows a police super-complaint from the Criminal Justice Alliance who’ve questioned the harms caused by this kind of power.
We spoke to the Inspector of Constabulary, Wendy Williams and began by asking whether section 60 stops should be repealed in light of this report.
